Gradescope by Turnitin honored in Tech & Learning’s Best Tools for Back to School 2021

Oakland, Calif.

Celebrating innovative solutions to pressing challenges in education, Tech & Learning’s Awards of Excellence 2021 program honored Gradescope by Turnitin in “The Best Tools for Back to School,” higher education category. Gradescope was chosen for its ability to optimize grading workflows in constantly shifting learning environments—from remote, to in-person, and hybrid.

Gradescope helps educators build, administer, organize, grade, and report on assessments and assignments. Gradescope works across all subjects and assessment types, including paper-based, digital, and code. The platform helps cut grading time in half and eases the pressures of growing classroom sizes by digitizing hand-written work and improving learning, efficiency, fairness, and scalability.

Students submit their digital and paper-based exam and homework responses into Gradescope either through direct digital submission, paper scans, or photos snapped from their smartphones. The platform uses AI to auto-group similar responses so that graders can quickly grade and give feedback. Using the dynamic rubric, instructors can adjust scales as they grade and automatically apply new rules to already graded assignments. Removing the time and error challenges that come with by-hand grading, this helps produce higher quality and consistent feedback at scale.

“As we head into another uncertain year in education, technology will continue to be one of the key drivers for innovation,” says Tech & Learning Group Publisher Christine Weiser. “Our judges chose the winning products recognized here for their versatility, compatibility, value, and ability to help schools solve challenges and support continuous instruction.”

“Knowing how challenging this year has been for academia globally, we are honored to be named in this year’s ‘Best Tools for Back to School’ by Tech & Learning,” says Turnitin CEO Chris Caren. “Educators and students need support now more than ever, and we are dedicated to easing the added challenges from the pandemic and providing tools like Gradescope that help educators and students focus their time on quality learning.”

Gradescope’s basic features are available free of charge to educators. Educators can also purchase upgrades or access Gradescope’s full features with an institutional license. Currently, over 90,000 educators globally use Gradescope.
